Dreamer Art Contest

We invite South African Grade 11 and 12 learners to interpret Tanya Junghans' novel "Dreamer: The Activation of Makeba" through the creation of 2D visual art. South Africa's rich landscape is steeped in folklore, mythology, traditions, and legends. Within the pages of "Dreamer," a young adult Fantasy novel, numerous themes paint a fantastical picture of South Africa, where mythical creatures coexist with its people. Express the essence of the novel through your visual art.

Eligibility

This call is intended for South African learners who will be in Grade 11 or Grade 12 in 2024 who wish to present 2D visual art in accordance with the theme of the contest.

General Submission Information

  • Artists in Grades 11 or 12 may apply through their teachers or using their teachers as a reference to verify that they are students.

  • Artists can apply with one or more artworks.

  • Submitted artworks must be able to be presented in an exhibition which the NYDA and/or The Tanya Artscape may host at their discretion.

  • Accepted artistic media is 2D visual art. This includes paintings, digital animation, photography, comic book art, spray painting, wall murals, and anime style.  

  • Collaborative works are welcome and eligible for submission. When submitting the work, please ensure to include the names of all participating artists (for example, artist name & artist name &…). If you have a collaborative group name, kindly provide it in the bio and prizes will be divided accordingly and equally. 

Timeframe

Responses to this call are to be submitted via email at info@artscapetanya.com by no later than noon (CAT) on the 22nd of March 2024. Applications received before 22 March 2024 will be analysed by the curatorial team. During this phase, the curatorial team may ask the applicant for clarification.  

All submissions will be acknowledged and will be dealt with in strictest confidence. Late submissions will not be accepted.

  • Submitting a response to this call is in no way a guarantee that the applying artists will be selected for the shortlisting nor/or pitching sessions, nor does it prevent any future applicants from responding to future procurement opportunities. 

  • The issuance of this call for artists does not constitute a commitment to issue a request for bids, award a contract, or pay any costs incurred in the preparation of a response to this call. 

  • Any clarifications and addenda updates regarding this call will be published on artscapetanya.com

  • Any requests for clarifications may be sent to info@artscapetanya.com up to seven days before the deadline of the call. 

  • Proposals with missing information, as specified in this call, will be deemed ineligible.  

  • Artists who wish to apply must submit a copy of their ID Document, School ID Document –specifically of the page with their identity and ID number.  

Response Format 

Responses are to be straightforward, clear, concise and specific to the information requested. For submissions to be considered complete, applicants must provide all the requested information mentioned in this document as well as any other comments, observations or suggestions which may potentially assist  The Tanya Artscape in shortlisting the applicants.

Shortlisted Applicants 

The Tanya Arscape may request the  applicant/s to present their project during a formal presentation. All costs associated with such presentations will be borne by the applicant/s, and presentations may be done in person or via video call. 

Evaluation Process 

Submitted proposals will be initially screened for eligibility. Afterwards, the eligible candidates will be shortlisted and then further assessed by a board of experts that will be purposely appointed and chaired by The Tanya Artscape and the NYDA. All applicants will be notified of their results by email. 

Shortlisting 

The evaluation board will meet during an initial evaluation meeting in which all the eligible applications will be discussed. Any further clarifications needed and/or queries will be communicated to the applicant. A second evaluation board decision meeting will determine the final selection of the applicants.  

All applications, including those not shortlisted, will receive their official result notification by the end of April 2024. 

Responsibilities of the Selected Artists 

  • The Artists are responsible for sharing their artwork online (TikTok, X (Twitter), Instagram, as part of their presentation on how their artwork affected their community. 

  • The delivery of proposed and accepted artworks for possible exhibition. Where necessary, the artists should seek insurance and adequate transportation for artwork. Be responsible for travel and accommodation arrangements, if necessary, for future exhibitions.

  • The artists are to keep The Tanya Artscape in the loop with all updates, changes, amendments, and developments and tag The Tanya Artscape, The NYDA and artist Tanya Junghans on social media to help showcase their process as they work on their pieces etc.  

  • To participate in media interviews and any promotional activities whilst supporting the marketing, PR and communications requirements stipulated by The Tanya Artscape and the NYDA. 

  • Document and advertise “Dreamer: The Activation of Makeba and the NYDA, through social media in liaison with The Tanya Artscape communications team. 

  • Be open for possible press and radio/TV interviews to discuss artworks.

  • Any final decisions are strictly those of the organizing bodies.  

  

Disclosure of Proposal Contents 

All proposal content provided by the applicant/s in accordance with this call will be kept in strict confidence and will not be revealed or discussed with competitors except to the extent required by law. 

The below steps are necessary to guarantee appropriate submission: 

  • Follow the instructions step by step. Provide all the required information on PDF submission and attach the supporting documentation.

  • Submit the application. Applicants should then receive an acknowledgement of receipt of their application. If the aforementioned notification is not received, artists should contact info@artscapetanya to confirm whether the application form has been successfully submitted or not.


Step To Apply:

  • Read the novel “Dreamer: The Activation of Makeba” by Tanya Junghans.

  • Create one or more pieces of 2D art based on the novel “Dreamer: The Activation of Makeba”.

  • Create a 1000-word description of your artwork relative to the novel Dreamer: The Activation of Makeba of how you interpreted the novel into 2D art. 

  • Share artwork on X, Instagram and TikTok and provide links to posts.

  • Provide a certified ID copy, School ID, your grade, your teacher’s name and the name of your school.

  • Provide your phone number and physical address.

  • Put all the required information and pictures of your artwork in a PDF and send it to info@artscapetanya.com as your application.

  • Print out this checklist to make sure you have everything you need.
